A Pakistani security official was killed after unidentified terrorists attacked a police vehicle deployed to protect a census team, officials said Thursday.

Two other people who were present in the vehicle were also injured in the attack. The team was headed to the restive province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

As the police vehicle was heading towards the target, unidentified terrorists opened fire on the police mobile team on duty with the census team. They were attacked in Dera Ismail district of the province.

The terrorists managed to flee the spot after the gunfight, following which the police launched a massive combing operation in the area to nab them. The injured policemen were admitted to Dera Ismail Khan District Headquarters Hospital.

On March 1, Pakistan launched its first-ever digital population, house and apartment census. The country's statistical office conducts the census under strict security measures.
